The Jungle Spa

During my stay in Qamea I visited a local village and met with the chief for a kava ceremony. In case you are not familiar, kava is a drink that is made from the root of the kava plant. This drink is used almost exclusively for social gatherings among the Fijians. After the ceremony, we toured the village and arrived at the local school. I enjoyed seeing that and all the children’s drawings around the room. I was also very impressed with how well they wrote in English! After we left the village, I decided to reward myself with a spa treatment at the Qamea Resort’s Jungle Spa. On my walk over to the spa, was where I started to notice the many different types of birds here in Fiji. I was lucky enough to spot a few orange doves, which are endemic to Fiji. Once I reached the spa, I had a full body massage that was the best that I have ever had. Besides the masseuse being fantastic, hearing all the noises of the rainforest from the spa was incredibly relaxing.

Be sure to come back tomorrow to hear about Horseback riding and bowling in Namale!

Diving in Namena, Fiji

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Twenty miles south of Savusavu lies the small island of Namena. Surrounded by mile after mile of unexplored reefs, I was eager to explore first hand why Fiji is known as the “Soft Coral Capital of the World”. While staying at the Jean-Michel Cousteau Fiji Resort, I pre-booked a dive package to go visit Namena for myself.

As a gift before my trip, my sister bought me a case for my digital camera and I was incredibly fortunate enough to both photograph and film my dives. The group that I went with did a total of two dives, each 45 minutes in length. While the pictures definitely can speak for themselves, I must say that I was blown away at all the vibrant colors of the soft coral. We were all unanimously amazed at the forests of coral that we were able to explore. The second dive took place at what the local guide referred to as “Grand Central Station” because of its density of big game fish (sharks, mackerel, tuna, etc) that occupy this area.

Make sure to check out the video of my dive:

Camille Cuaresma’s Fiji Adventures

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Bula everyone! Camille Cuaresma here to talk about my recent trip to Fiji! I went on so many adventures this trip that I couldn’t possibly speak about them all. I decided that I would hand pick my absolute favorite highlights and post about them here (once per day) for the next week.

The first highlight of my trip that I would like to share is that I was lucky enough to play the back 9 at the Denarau Golf and Racquet Club. The grounds were beautifully manicured with amazing views of the ocean and the surrounding tropical foliage. The course is as unique as it is challenging but is also suited for golfers of any difficulty, ranging from the weekend enthusiast to the more accomplished player.

After I finished my wonderful game of golf, I fortunately had enough time available to go and visit the Koroipita Project. Legends currently donates a portion of each Fiji reservation we make to the Koroipita Project which helps create a model township for local Fijians and make their dream of home ownership a reality. This township provides them with a new home, running water, sewerage, electricity, child education and a secure environment for their families to live. In addition to the construction of these homes, the project also helps develop the skills of the people of Koroipita through home-craft teaching programs which would aid in generating income.

My time here was incredibly special and the local Fijian people who lived there touched my heart with their sincere happiness and appreciation for such a basic necessity. That in unto itself made my trip one that I would never forget.

Be sure to come back tomorrow and watch the video of me Ziplining from the Taunovo Bay Resort, and read about that highlight!
