One of the things that makes travel so delicious is the local cuisine that defines each destination. Tahiti is home to many fancy restaurants, some manned by world-famous chefs and housed in luxury resorts, yet many would be surprised to find that one of the best food experiences in Tahiti comes in the form of…food trucks. Not only that, but food trucks have been a part of Tahiti’s culture for decades now, long before the food truck craze hit in the States. Our 10th Secret of Tahiti is all about Tahiti’s food trucks called Les Roulottes and why no trip to Tahiti is complete without a stop here!

Les Roulottes – Food Trucks in Papeete, Tahiti

Les Roulottes are located in Papeete, in a square that overlooks the waterfront and the cruise ship docks. Every evening at 6pm, the many trucks set up shop with food offerings such as Chinese food, crepes, steaks, pizza, poisson cru and more! It is thought that the Roulottes (French for caravans) began as a more affordable dining option for the locals since restaurants are typically fairly expensive in French Polynesia. Although many tourists now add this to their trip itineraries, the area has retained its authentic feel with many locals also frequenting the square for a casual night out. The warm breeze and live music make this a fun and convivial atmosphere to enjoy an idyllic Tahitian evening.

Our picks? The Chinese food (especially the chow mein) is delicious! All of the portion sizes are quite large and easy to share with a group. However, make sure you have cash on hand as that is the only form of payment accepted. For those of you who have a few hours to kill in Tahiti between your international and inter-island flights, be sure to make time for this exciting and authentic experience! Food trucks are always a fun experience and when you add in a warm tropical evening by the water with live music, it simply can’t be beat!
