The Tuamotu Archipelago is the largest collection of coral atolls in existence. The largest of these atolls is the island of Rangiroa; measuring in at 42 miles long and 16 miles wide. Widely praised for its world-class diving, snorkeling and deep-sea fishing, this natural aquarium is home to a wide variety of marine life and offers quite a selection of dive sites. Below the surface of the lagoon, the Avatoru and Tiputa Passes boast marine life sightings that include: lemon sharks, barracuda, dolphins, green sea turtles, hawksbill turtles and so much more!
When traveling to this remote paradise, there are a variety of different hotel/resort experiences available to you. Here are three that we believe provide completely unique experiences for the discerning traveler.
1) Hotel Kia Ora Resort & Spa
At the recently renovated/refurbished (in 2011) Hotel Kia Ora Resort & Spa you can choose to stay in an overwater bungalow or in a private villa (some even include a jacuzzi or a pool) on the beach. Nestled in the heart of a magnificent coconut plantation, this property boasts an elegant and refined architecture that stays in perfect harmony with its environment. Some of the resorts guest amenities include: two gourmet restaurants, an infinity pool, a relaxation spa, a boutique and a fitness center.
2) Kia Ora Sauvage
Located on its own private motu, the Kia Ora Sauvage offers a true ‘Robinson Crusoe’ experience to guests. This intimate hotel features only 5 bungalows and they are designed with traditional materials such as bamboo and exotic wood. What makes the property even more unique is that there is no electricity in the bungalows which allows guests to experience the tropical breeze of the South Pacific with nothing but the stars and a lantern to light their way.
3) Motu Teta Private Island
On a secluded islet located just off of the atoll of Rangiroa there is a private island called Motu Tetaraire, or “Motu Teta” for short. This private island retreat is available exclusively for private rentals. In addition to having full, private access to the two villas on property guests will enjoy complimentary water sports equipment and their very own private chef that will prepare their meals as well as an excursion guide who will arrange their daily activities – should they choose to participate.
